HOW TO ORGANIZE A BIG MESS...START TO FINISH

This past Saturday I spent a few hours cleaning out our kitchen pantry and the cabinet above our stove, that also holds pantry items.

I had the house to myself and no plans so I took my time, listened to a few podcast episodes, sanitized everything, threw a lot of stuff away, and organized everything. IT FELT GREAT.

Since we didn't have any plans I was able to take my time, even leaving to run to the store to pick up a few baskets, and organize everything to work just for us. Now if I didn't have enough time I probably wouldn't have even started that project, because I hate being rushed when cleaning/organizing. If I'm rushed when it comes to organizing then it's just not going to get done the way I want it to be and will quickly turn into a mess again very soon after I finish, but with having time to take everything out, look at what works for us and what didn't (hello crazy big mess) I am able to change things up a bit. Below I'll share the steps to organizing a big mess using our pantry as an example since that's the big mess I tackled this past weekend.

Since I love seeing before and after pictures let's start with that
If you look at the 'before' picture then you will see a hot mess. Cans literally about to fall off the shelf, the shelves on the door are overflowing, things are everywhere and have no order whatsoever. If you look at the 'after' picture then you will see an organized pantry! Things are in their place, there are TWO empty shelves on the door, and I don't have to worry about anything falling out when I open the door.

Step ONE |
The first thing I did was find a podcast I wanted to listen to and then I began pulling everything out of our pantry. I laid everything out on our counters so that once I was finished I could go through and decide on what I wanted to keep and what I wanted to dispose of.

Step TWO |
We have a few of the 3-tier cabinet organizers and this 2- tier cabinet lazy susan in our pantry and they are a life saver for us!! I love them and use them all the time. After I emptied the pantry I took all of the organizers that I have and let them soak in hot soapy water while I went through everything else, and then washed them really well before putting them back in the pantry.
I also wiped down all the shelves in the pantry and then vacuumed the pantry floor.

Step THREE |
After that was done I went through everything on the counters. Some stuff was outdated, some stuff we didn't need anymore, some boxes had one thing left in it, and some things I have no idea how it ended up in our pantry.

Step FOUR |
Once that part was finished, I started putting things back in the pantry, but this time everything had a certain spot. I put the things we use daily at eye level an the things we don't use often on the very top shelf. This also helps when it comes tome to make my grocery list. If I can't see something in our pantry when I open the door then I sometimes assume we are out of it and will order more of it. Which in the long run wastes money and causes clutter in our pantry.
Two EMPTY shelves after I was finished...woo hoo! I plan on finding a small container to put on one of those shelves that will hold snacks, that we can just easily grab out of there on our way out the door.

The fourth shelf houses all of our pasta/rice items and chicken/beef broth (I buy it in bulk when it goes on sale!) I need a basket for my lemons!
On the bottom shelf I used containers similar to these (I found them at Home Goods for around $5 a piece) and placed certain items in them. Most of the bottom shelf/containers hold all of our baking items. I love those clear containers, they are the perfect size and since they are clear I can see everything in them.

The third shelf houses all of our canned goods. I have two of the 3-tier organizers on this shelf. I can see at all times what canned goods we have, makes it SO much easier when making out my grocery list!

On the second shelf is our bread/tortillas and our pantry lazy susan. Again, this thing is a life saver and I use it whenever I cook. I love being able to see every spice/seasoning mix that I have by just turning this thing. Behind it is our extra flour and sugar. I like to keep those things in a clear container above the stove, so I store the extra behind the pantry lazy susan since I don't use them daily.

Step FIVE |
After everything is back in the pantry and organized you'll probably need to wipe down your counters and vacuum your kitchen. I didn't realize stuff dropped out of certain boxes when moving everything back and forth and had sugar, flour, etc. on the counters and floor. Also, you'll probably need to empty your trash after! We had a ton of boxes and out dated items in ours.

SEASONAL LABELS

Last week I shared my packing labels with y'all and this week I am going to share the seasonal labels I created. I made these to help me with organizing and labeling my storage totes in our house. I like to be able to find something rather quickly than having to search hours for it. I have all of our seasonal decorations in a guest bedroom closet in these storage totes, and having these labels visible on the appropriate box helps locating which box I need to get to easily.

PACKING LABELS

When we started packing up our apartment I knew I needing to keep everything organized to help with the move and unpacking at our house, so I made some packing labels! They were very helpful and it was so much easier on us and the movers. The movers just saw the labels and knew which room to take that box to. Not only were they helpful for the move but some are still being used. I have kept some of the labels on the boxes, and the others that aren't needed anymore I just threw away. They came off easily and didn't leave a mess, easy and smooth!
We bought these totes and these totes right after Christmas when they were on sale. We knew we would end up using them after the move to store decorations and other things so we jumped on the sale. These labels helped us so much (and still are) that I wanted to share them with you! Whether you are moving or just need to organize, I hope these help!

I just cut them in strips and they fit perfectly under packaging tape. I also color coded them. The pink are for the downstairs and the blue is for the upstairs. This worked for our house, but they may not apply to your home- color wise.

ORGANIZING YOUR PINTEREST

I remember Pinterest coming out back when I was still in high school and I would spend hours "pinning" things, and still do! In the past few months I have really tried to organize my Pinterest boards for myself and I have been able to see some growth in those months. So I'll share with you some of the things that I think helped.

1 |  Label your boards with one or two words...
Nothing annoys me quicker than going to someone's Pinterest and scrolling through all of their boards trying to find something specific and having to stop and read each long title to figure out which board the pin I am looking for is on. And then I remembered, "oh wait, that's how my boards are labeled." So I did some title changing very quickly!
          - Before my food/recipes board was labeled "Good lookin' what's cookin?" I changed it to "Recipes" you could also go with "Food" or "Eat" or if you separate them into different categories you could do, "Appetizers", "Main Dishes", "Sides",  "Desserts", "Drinks", etc.
          - My Travel board was "Take Me There" and I changed it to "TRAVEL" of course you can see the pictures and make out what the board probably is about, but when I'm in a hurry trying to find a pin I saw earlier that day I need to get to that point quickly.

2 | Move your boards..
My first board always stays the same, it's my blog board. The next few after that I try to keep it updated with the upcoming seasons. So right now I have my fall and Christmas board. Right now people are mostly pinning fall and Christmas stuff to get ideas for the upcoming holidays.
Just click on your board and drag it to the location you want it. Very simple!

3 | Categorize your boards .
I like to have all my boards in their own little area. All my seasons are next to each other, style, travel, food, etc. Again, just click on your board and move it to your desired area.

4 | Cover Photo
I make sure on all of my boards that the cover picture actually represents what is on that board.
Example... These two pictures are representing what the board consists of, and they fit pretty well too.

To change the cover picture of your board...

1. Click on the board > Top right hand corner click Edit Board
2. Once you are in there, click on Change

3. You will be able to scroll through the pictures that are on that board. Go through them and decide which represents that board the best and which one fits the best. You can adjust the picture some to have it fit in the square.

4. Save Changes.

5 | Description...
On each board, go through and add a short and sweet description of what is on the board.

So there you go! Just some small tips that I think can really make a big difference, for you and for your followers! Do you have any tips for organizing your Pinterest boards?

5 moving tips that will keep you stress F-R-E-E!

If you have been reading along then you know that I recently moved into my 1st apartment.
I have lived in the same house since the day I came home from the hospital so obviously over the years I have collected junk and just put it in my room and this girl had no idea where to even start with the packing considering I have only packed long enough for a week in the past.
So I just dived right in, well that's a lie I looked on Pinterest to find the best tips for moving and keeping things organized.
Here are some pictures of the packing and cleaning out my room process....fair warning it's a scary sight!!

A completely unorganized mess and if you know me then you know that I was about to lose my mind from all the mess.
So I am going to share some of my moving tips with you....
TIP #1
-clean out your closet or room a couple of weeks before you have to start packing.
If you haven't worn it in the past 6 months, donate it or sell it!!!!
You are not going to want to deal with that when you are trying to pack up everything.
TIP #2
-Label everything and I mean EVERYTHING. From your q-tips to your pj's label it.
It will help you when it comes time to unpack everything and will save a lot on time!!!!
TIP #3
-Do you have suitcases, duffle bags, carry on bags, plastic containers, or laundry bins?
Pack you clothes that can be folded in those!!!! I cannot stress that enough! Fit as much as possible, even if you have to sit on it and get someone to help you zip it (thank you sista for helpin me out!)
Why would you want to go buy boxes to move stuff when you can just pack it in you Vera Bradley bag?
I ended up packing up 2 Vera Bradley bags, 1 suitcase, 1 tote from Marshall's (that big blue one up there) full of t-shirts,shorts,yoga pants, shoes, and my unmentionables ;)
It saved on money & time of going and buying them or asking different stores if they had any extra boxes I could have.
TIP #4
-All of my shirts, dresses and dress pants that I left them hanging and just got a huge black trash bag and wrapped around them and then lifted them up off the rack and laid them flat in my back seat of my car. Sadly I didn't take a picture of that but here is the picture from Pinterest that gave me the idea
y'all this actually works and saved a lot of time from having to take the shirts off the hanger, fold them so they won't wrinkle and then pack up all the hangers....genius!

TIP  #5
If you have the chance to go ahead to your new apartment/dorm/house then go ahead and take some stuff and unload it and organize everything that you can. That way you don't have to take EVERYTHING at once and spend ALL day unpacking organizing. If you do a little bit at a time it's definitely less stressful and you aren't rushed to get everything done before it's time for you to leave that night or time to go to bed.
Do you really want to go to sleep with you room still a mess and unorganized? Didn't think so.

Some of these tips I did and some of them I wish I would have, so take it from me friends!
Hope you all are having a wonderful week so far!!!!

Day 17 of Things I Love

Day 17 of Things I Love: Planning

I plan all things out and to be honest I sometimes get a little frustrated when things don't go as planned. I'm working on that!

I LOVE planning anything and everything...birthdays, parties, get together, work meetings..you name it and I'll start planning away.

Here recently I helped plan a baby shower back in September for a coworker and this past Christmas I helped plan a Christmas party at work, so much fun! Also around Christmas time I planned our first annual couples Christmas party. Seriously had the best time with good friends, good food and funny gag gifts!

I have already planned Matthew's Valentine's Day presents and surprises.
I would go on and tell you what it is but Mr. Impatient might get on here and look if he thinks I posted something about his gift on here, ha!

I am also already planning for his 21st birthday, it's not until March 11th but if I don't start now I will not be able to get everything that I want! I honestly think I am more excited for his birthday than he is. Although he did throw out a birthday present suggestion...little does he know I already have it picked out with a few other things,ha!

I will more than likely post about his birthday so watch for it closer to time!

what events do you plan?
