#THECOATSHOME : PAINTING OUR FRONT DOOR

When we moved into our home back in January we both agreed we didn't really care for the front door color. It was a dark gray but has faded over the years and there were scratches on it. It wasn't top priority but we knew it was something we wanted to complete sooner rather than later.

We thought about different colors over the past few months but never nailed anything down. I didn't really think Matthew would want to go for a bright or bold color, and I didn't really want anything too crazy either. We both wanted something simple and classy. I threw out the option of painting our door black. I looked at tons of black front doors and loved the simplicity of the color, and most wreaths would go with the color black...gotta think about these kinds of things! ;) Well Matthew wasn't too keen on the color black and knew that I liked some other colors as well so we kept looking at colors. Well when Blair posted the color that they painted their front door I loved it. Pretty, bright and classy! I casually showed Matthew the color one night after dinner, not thinking too much of it, and he loved it, and said that was the color for our front door. I'll admit, I was a little shocked, but excited he liked the color too and that we both agreed on it, so that was our color! We decided to paint our door over Labor Day Weekend.

We knew that taking our front door off would let in a lot of heat, obviously, so we started around 8 that morning in an attempt to try and beat the heat. Thankfully it was very sunny that morning so I painted in the open sun to dry the door quickly, and it worked! We decided to paint both sides of our door, and we are SO happy with it. We love being able to see the color on the inside as well. That pop of color in our entryway is so fun. After painting both sides, in total, we probably had our front door off for about 2 hours, not too bad!

Last year on Labor Day Weekend we gave our dining room table a makeover and this year we painted our front door...my inner Joanna Gaines is liking this tradition ;)

Before I stared painting I wiped down the entire door, both sides, with a damp rag. After it dried I sanded both sides lightly. I used a sanding sponge similar to these. I then wiped off both sides with a damp rag again, and then let it dry completely before I started painting.

I was very nervous for some reason when it came time to paint our door, I guess because I knew if I messed it up and it didn't turn out well then it would be the first thing everyone saw until we got a new front door...so just a little pressure! I looked up a ton of tutorials and YouTube videos, but really it wasn't hard at all. Once I got to painting it just kinda flowed and worked out great.

I will say, one thing I learned, is to use a small roller on the detailed areas. I started out using a brush, but decided the small roller worked better. I used a small roller from Lowe's like this one. I used a regular sized roller on the rest of the door, and I think that helped with making sure it was all even and smooth looking! I did two coats on each side and I think that was plenty.

I painted all sides of the door, except the top, since no one will see that area anyways! I used the small roller for the sides as well. Worked like a charm!

I know you can tape off your hardware (door handles) and such but since I despise taping anything we just took off our door handles until the paint was completely dry. It didn't take long and I didn't have to be extra careful in those area.

Our front door color is Benjamin Moore Wythe Blue, and we could not be happier with it!

FRIDAY NO. 29

Woo hoo! We are so close to a 3 day weekend. I still can't wrap my mind around the fact that it is indeed September already!! I remember last year on our leave early day before Labor Day weekend I went and got my name changed! It was the only time I had to do it since most of the offices are closed by time I get off.

Also, speaking of last Labor Day....last year over our long weekend we gave our dining room table a makeover!! That weekend was probably one of my top favorite weekends in our first year of marriage. The weather was great, and we just enjoyed the weekend together working on our dining room table. And when it was finished we just sat there and looked at it for a good 5 minutes, admiring it lol. Sweet, sweet memories for sure.

We ordered this rug for our living room and it should come in today!! I am so excited and can't wait to see it in our living room. We actually ordered two...for both sides of our living room! We had originally wanted navy rugs with some white detailing, but then decided that since our couches are dark we should go with a lighter rug. I was very hesitant about getting a light colored rug, but that's what carpet cleaners are for.
This morning I walked outside to get in my car and it truly felt like fall. 68 with a light breeze. I wish I had woken up sooner and sat out on the back patio with some cereal and a cozy blanket! Oh well, it won't last too long, it's supposed to be back in the 90's by Monday :) at least we know fall is coming! I found this adorable September desktop calendar for my work computer and love it!

I am decorating for fall this weekend and I am one happy/excited girl!

We also recently bought this warm & cool mist humidifier diffuser. With Matthew's sinus situation going on we decided to start using a humidifier. I had one from my college apartment but it was an old one and only a warm mist. In his instructions for recovery, after his surgery next week, it specifically says a cool mist humidifier only. So we got to searching for one and found this one on sale! It also works as a diffuser for oils, which I have been looking into a lot lately. So we jumped on this good deal and have been enjoying it every night since it delivered! We also bought some peppermint oil and put in it and have enjoyed that as well!

I hope you all have a great 3 day weekend!! :)

Dining Room Table Makeover

Excuse the mess and bad lighting. We were just so excited to have the table finally together lol.

Matthew and I have been talking about re-doing our dining room table for a couple of weeks and decided Labor Day weekend would be the perfect time to do it. We had looked at a ton of options on how we wanted to do it and decided on something like this...

Saturday morning we slept in past 6:30 and then jumped right up and Matthew went to Lowe's for the wood and supplies and I started on breakfast! Because pancakes and bacon is the best way to start any day, right? ;)

Saturday was all about getting the supplies and prepping it. Matthew made all the cuts and then we decided how it was going to go on the frame.

Our work area was our little 8x8 deck. We put our drop cloths down so our neighbors wouldn't get covered in saw dust. I'm sure they appreciated that ;)

Once it got too dark outside we moved inside to do the staining. We decided it only needed one coat of stain. We also stained both sides to see which side looked the best once stained.

Our apartment was a complete wreck this past weekend so ignore all the mess. We only had one thing on our mind and that was to finish our table!!

Matthew put a coat of polyurethane on the wood and it needed about 3 hours to soak in and dry so we ran to the store to get more brushes and drove around and looked at some houses that are for sale. I absolutely LOVE doing this with Matthew. It's one of our favorite things to do lol. By time we got back it was time to attach the stained wood on the table frame!

Our before and after!

Matthew attached it last night and put the last coat of polyurethane on it! We still have a couple of chairs to finish and then we are completely done! Our main goal was to have the table completely finished by Monday night. We also have to go pick our fabric to put over our seat cushions. We tried the white on a white and they are a different shade and look awful together lol. Overall this was a pretty fun project. We would get really excited after each big step as we saw it coming together and are so happy with how it turned out! It also makes the room a lot brighter. The best part of this project was working on it together. I sanded some while Matthew was cutting the wood or I was painting while he was sanding and cutting. We talked about everything under the sun while working on this table, watched some Netflix while stuff was drying or while staining, or listened to Pandora.
It was the perfect long weekend together and I can't think of a better way to end the best summer, ever.
